What are LEAPS and when do they make sense?

LEAPS (Long-term Equity Anticipation Securities) are options with 180+ days to expiry. A deep-in-the-money LEAPS call (delta ~0.70) lets you control 100 shares for 20–50% of the stock's capital cost, providing 3–5x leverage at a fraction of the cost of margin. The sweet spot: buy when IV rank is below 40 (cheap premium), use a 1–2 year expiry to minimise daily theta decay, and target stocks with strong fundamental setups. Unlike short-dated options, LEAPS lose value slowly — daily time-decay on a 1yr LEAPS is typically <0.05% of premium.

Methodology notes
  • [HEURISTIC] Value score weights (IVR 40%, leverage 35%, quality 25%) are practitioner-anchored, not back-tested via Brier scoring.
  • [APPROXIMATION] IV rank uses a proxy 52-week high/low range. Production accuracy requires a daily ATM IV history series per ticker.
  • [SIMPLIFIED] Black-Scholes pricing assumes zero dividend yield (q = 0). High-yield stocks may show slightly overstated leverage ratios.
  • [NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE] LEAPS involve significant risk including potential total loss of premium paid. Past IV regimes do not guarantee future option returns.
