Factor Crowding Monitor

Hedge fund positioning overlap and unwind risk across 8 canonical equity factors. Crowding score combines 13F institutional overlap, short interest, AQR factor co-movement, and ETF flow (Pedersen 2015). When crowded factors see outflows — exit risk rises sharply.

⚠
Extreme Crowding Detected
One or more factors are at or above the 90th percentile of historical crowding. Positions that are long these factors carry elevated unwind risk.

Unwind Risk Matrix — Crowding × Recent Flows

Quadrant placement combines crowding percentile (high = top half vs history) and 30-day ETF flow direction. High-crowding + outflows is the most dangerous combination — historically associated with factor drawdowns of 10–30%.

Portfolio Implications
If you hold momentum-heavy stocks
Momentum is typically the most crowded factor at cycle peaks. Stocks with high 12-1 return rank are held by the same institutional managers — AQR co-movement is high. A risk-off event causes simultaneous forced liquidation. Consider reducing position size when momentum crowding exceeds 80.
Quality + Growth convergence risk
Quality and Growth now overlap heavily in large-cap tech. When both factors are crowded simultaneously, a single sector rotation (e.g. AI bubble deflation) can unwind both factors at once. Monitor the correlation between quality and growth crowding scores.
Value & Low Vol as crowding hedges
When momentum/quality/growth are all crowded, Value and Low Volatility tend to be uncrowded by construction — hedge funds are net short or neutral. An allocation to value or low-vol provides factor diversification that reduces drawdown from a momentum unwind.
Carry & Size as independent sources
Size (small-cap) and dividend Carry have low hedge fund alignment in the current regime. They can provide return diversification but are not immune — rate shocks (e.g. Fed tightening) affect carry, and liquidity crises hit small-cap Size harder than large-cap factors.
Methodology
13F Institutional Overlap
Cohen, Polk & Silli (2010)
Fraction of a factor's top-quintile candidates also held by the top 50 institutional 13F filers. Higher overlap = more hedge funds own the same stocks.
Short Interest
Boehmer, Jones & Zhang (2008)
Average short interest as % of float across the factor's top-quintile universe. Extreme short interest on the OTHER side also indicates crowding in the opposite direction.
AQR Factor Co-movement
Lou & Polk (2022)
Realized correlation of the factor's portfolio returns with the public AQR factor series. High correlation = quant funds are co-moving → systemic liquidation risk.
ETF Flow (30-day)
Pedersen (2015) — Efficiently Inefficient
Net ETF inflow into single-factor ETFs (MTUM / QUAL / VLUE / USMV etc.) as % of AUM over trailing 30 days. Strong inflows push factor crowding higher; outflows accelerate unwinds.

Aggregation: Equal-weight z-score across 4 components mapped to 0–100 crowding score (engine: factor-crowding-monitor-2026-05-20-v2). Missing components redistribute weight rather than defaulting to zero (per charter §feedback_no_defaults). Historical percentile uses a 2010–2026 crowding distribution fitted to observed regimes. Data posture: reads the stored crowding table only. While no producer has written it the API returns 503 and this page shows the refusal reason, not a score.
